Hollywood horror maestro John Carpenter recently compared former President Donald Trump to the mind-control alien creatures featured in his 1988 movie, “They Live.” Speaking on The Hollywood Reporter’s “It Happened in Hollywood” podcast, Carpenter discussed how Trump fits into the world of the film, where an alien race silently moves among humans, manipulating mass media to control their thoughts.
Podcast host Seth Abramovitch noted that Trump appears well-suited for the movie’s universe. In response, 76-year-old Carpenter agreed, stating, “Of course it does. It makes total sense.” However, it remains unclear why Carpenter believes Trump controls people through mass media, as most of the media is against him and his opponent Kamala Harris seems to exert more influence over the mainstream news media, Silicon Valley, and higher education.
Carpenter also revisited a common Democratic talking point by equating Trump with racism. He expressed heartache over the “return of racism and xenophobia,” attributing it to Trump’s influence. Carpenter grew up in the South and experienced Jim Crow firsthand, noting that he always knew the sentiments would persist despite any laws passed. Despite Trump’s growing popularity among minority voters, Carpenter maintains a negative view of the former president and his impact on society.
