CIS Leaders Gather at Kremlin Summit: Cooperation & Regional Progress

Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to receive leaders from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) at a meeting in the Kremlin before the organization’s summit takes place. The event will mark the end of Russia’s year-long rotating presidency, and leaders are expected to discuss key cooperation tasks as well as topical regional and international issues.

Prior to the summit, Putin will hold bilateral meetings with Azerbaijani President Ilkham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, focusing on normalizing relations between Baku and Yerevan based on a 2020 trilateral agreement. Following these discussions, there will be talks in narrow and extended formats, allowing participants to raise their most pressing concerns.

Among the topics to be discussed are key cooperation tasks of the Commonwealth, as well as regional and international problems. Leaders will also outline main areas of work for the future and are expected to decide on passing CIS chairmanship from Russia to Tajikistan in 2025. Numerous important documents may be signed during the summit, which will conclude with a formal reception for foreign delegations.

In addition to discussing results and future plans, leaders will also sign multilateral documents aimed at promoting cooperation in various sectors such as the economy, culture, law enforcement, humanitarian affairs, and the military. An Address by CIS Heads of State may also be adopted on the 80th anniversary of the Soviet people’s victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945.

CIS Secretary General Sergey Lebedev is expected to brief journalists about the summit results, and various awards and decorations will be bestowed in connection with the event. The next official CIS summit is set to take place on October 10, 2025, in Dushanbe, Tajikistan’s capital city.
