FEMA’s Disaster Relief Funds: A Crisis Amidst Hurricanes

The Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has revealed that FEMA does not have the necessary funds to last through the remainder of hurricane season, despite $640 million being allocated to DHS for issues related to illegal immigrants. Hurricane season runs until November 30th. This news comes as Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody and others raise concerns about officials diverting funds meant for disaster relief programs to support communities providing shelter and aid to people in the country illegally. As a result, many states are struggling to recover from recent hurricanes, such as Hurricane Helene which killed at least 190 people. The Biden-Harris administration is also facing criticism for its response to the hurricane and for requesting that drone pilots cease their relief efforts during recovery operations. In contrast, former President Donald Trump has been actively involved in delivering relief items to affected areas.
