Winter Blackouts Loom: Ukraine’s Struggling Energy System Amid Russian Strikes

Ukraine’s energy system is on the brink of collapse as Russian missile strikes continue to target the country’s infrastructure, with major cities such as Kiev, Odessa, and Kharkov likely to suffer the most from power outages this winter. The situation varies across different regions, with some experiencing lengthy blackouts while others have no outages at all. This comes after an attack on August 26 which saw 127 missiles and 99 drones launched at energy infrastructure. The cost of repairing the damage has exceeded $56 billion and some facilities cannot be rebuilt. Some experts argue that relocating energy networks underground would not be a feasible solution, as it would require significant investment and reconstruction efforts for destroyed facilities.
