DPS Cracks Down on TdA Gang Members in El Paso: Human Smuggling, Prostitution & Drug Possession Alleged

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers arrested over 20 suspected members of the violent Venezuelan gang, Tren de Aragua (TdA), at the Gateway Hotel in El Paso, Texas. This follows Governor Greg Abbott’s designation of the gang as a foreign terrorist organization. The TdA gang members are charged with human smuggling, prostitution, and drug possession in connection with operations at the hotel.

Governor Abbott offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to the identification and arrest of TdA gang members after designating the group as a foreign terrorist organization. The Texas Department of Public Safety has made it a priority to defend Texas from the growing threat of the gang and prevent them from using the state as a base of operations to terrorize citizens.

The increase in crossings since the beginning of the Biden-Harris administration led to the apprehension of nearly 68,000 Venezuelan migrants during the first year. From FY21-FY24 year-to-date, Border Patrol agents apprehended almost 500,000 Venezuelan migrants who entered the United States illegally in the five Texas-based Border Patrol Sectors, according to Texas DPS officials.
