Majority of Voters Doubt Biden-Harris Economic Progress

The RMG Research poll found that 57% of registered voters believe they are not better off under the Biden-Harris administration compared to four years ago under former President Donald Trump. The findings highlight the preference for a change in the direction of the country, particularly concerning the economy, which remains the top issue for the 2024 election. Only 25% of Americans rate the economic conditions under the Biden-Harris administration as “excellent or good,” according to Pew Research survey results released this week.

The poll asked respondents, “Are you better off today than you were four years ago?” A majority answered no, with 37% responding yes and 6% remaining unsure. When asked about their personal finances, a plurality of respondents (38%) answered that they were somewhat worse or much worse off these days. The poll also inquired if the respondent’s income had kept up with inflation or fallen behind over the past year, with 66% responding that their income had been falling behind and only 28% stating that their income kept up with inflation.

The RMG Research poll surveyed 1,000 registered voters from September 9-10, carrying a +/- 3.1 percentage point margin of error. Under the Biden-Harris administration, average inflation soared by about 20 percent across the board. Around 70% of Americans are “very concerned” about food and consumer prices, according to Pew Research. The same survey found that concerns about housing costs have increased alongside worries about the labor market.

A Times/Siena College poll revealed that 61% of likely voters believe the next president should represent a major change from the Biden-Harris administration. Only 25% said Vice President Kamala Harris represented such a change, while a majority believed former President Trump represented change.
