WestJet’s new fare category: ‘No bag, no problem

On May 22, CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech announced that Air Canada will be introducing a new “ultra-low” fare category within the next couple of weeks. This move is aimed at attracting budget-conscious travellers and reducing the overhead bin space clutter for other passengers. Those purchasing the lowest fare will not have the option to store their carry-on bags in the overhead bins, but they will still be able to store small personal items like knapsacks or purses underneath the seat in front of them.

According to von Hoensbroech, large numbers of passengers vying for limited overhead bin space has become a significant issue on full flights, particularly when the plane is an older model of aircraft with smaller bins. The introduction of this new fare category will help alleviate some of these problems by discouraging passengers from bringing carry-on bags and freeing up more space for other travellers.

The concept of “unbundling” airline fares has become increasingly popular in recent years, as the ultra-low-cost carrier model continues to rise. This approach allows passengers to pay only for the specific services they need, such as seat selection, checked baggage or in-flight entertainment, while still offering a basic fare for budget travellers.

CEO von Hoensbroech emphasizes that Air Canada wants to offer a range of choices and cater to various types of passengers – from those seeking premium comfort at a higher price point to those looking for the cheapest possible fare without sacrificing essential amenities. By introducing this new ultra-low fare category, the airline aims to provide even more options for passengers to choose the travel experience that best suits their needs and preferences.
