Trump Gains Ground as Polls Tighten, RNC Chairman Credits Strong Stances on Key Issues

RNC Chairman Michael Whatley has credited former President Donald Trump’s increasing popularity in recent polls to his strong stance on key issues such as the economy, safety and jobs. In an interview with Breitbart News Daily, Whatley spoke ahead of Tuesday night’s debate between Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. He praised CNN for playing it straight during their last debate with Joe Biden, noting that ABC has a similar opportunity to demonstrate its credibility as a serious news organization.

A Marist/NPR/PBS News poll released on Tuesday revealed that Trump and Harris are currently neck and neck nationwide. The survey showed Trump gaining three points of support since the August 1-4 poll, when he scored 45 percent with registered voters in a field with third-party options. At that time, he was trailing Harris by three points, who garnered 48 percent. Although she has climbed one percent following the Democratic National Convention, her lead has slipped two points since August.

The previous survey also indicated that independent Robert F. Kennedy Jr. secured five percent of support. Since then, he has suspended his campaign and is now endorsing Trump, suggesting that this endorsement may have contributed to Trump’s increasing popularity in the September poll.

Additionally, a Quinnipiac survey found that Trump leads Harris in Georgia, outside the margin of error for that survey. Whatley highlighted the importance of these issues for voters: “The American people have made it very clear their concerns that they’re going to vote on are the economy, jobs, safety, and security, and Donald Trump is winning in the polls on every single one of those issues.
