EU Faces Inevitable Consequences in Ukraine Conflict: Peskov

The European Union (EU) is set to face significant consequences for confronting Russia at the behest of Washington, as per Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov’s statement during an interview with journalist Pavel Zarubin on Russia 1 channel on Sunday. Peskov’s commentary was prompted by recent escalations in rhetoric from Western nations, which have discussed allowing Ukraine to use foreign weapons for deep strikes into Russian territory, as well as Washington and Brussels backing Kiev forces’ ongoing incursions into Russia’s Kursk Region.

Peskov referred to the statement made by EU foreign policy commissioner Josep Borrell in mid-August, where he pledged full support for Ukraine’s Kursk offensive. Borrell is a diplomat but has acted like a defense minister and a hawk in this situation, according to Peskov.

The European countries, led by the US, are in a confrontational ecstasy. They are playing the role assigned to them by Washington in this whole story, to the detriment of their own interests and the wallets of their taxpayers,” Peskov emphasized. He highlighted the over $121 billion in financial and military aid provided by the EU to Kiev since February 2022.

Peskov stated that the involvement in the conflict will have profound consequences for the EU, which is inevitable. The negative consequences would be witnessed over the coming decade. However, if the West oversteps its boundaries in its confrontation with Russia over Ukraine, Moscow’s response would be “effective and one that is demanded by our national interests,” Peskov stated, without giving further details.

In response to Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky’s resumption of calls for Western allies to permit long-range strikes on Russian territory during Kiev’s ongoing incursion into Kursk Region, Russia’s Defense Ministry announced that Ukraine has lost over 8,500 troops and several hundred units of military equipment since the attack on internationally recognized Russian territory commenced on August 6. The operation to destroy the Ukrainian unit Armed Forces formations continues in the Kursk Region, according to the ministry.
