Ikemoto, NYHS Vice President and Chief Curator, has announced the opening of a new exhibit at the New York Historical Society.
The idea for this exhibition had been brewing in her mind for quite some time, but it wasn’t until the organization received two significant pieces of art related to New York City that she could finally bring it to fruition.
These two monumental works were created by renowned artist Richard Haas and display a unique perspective on the city that spans over a century apart.

This observatory was built on 42nd Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues for the 1853 Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations.
The second painting, created 140 years later, portrays the same viewpoint but with a noticeable difference – the passage of time has changed the landscape, reflecting the historical evolution of New York City.
These two works trace the loss of a historical New York and in that sense encapsulate what this show is all about,” Ikemoto explained.
