India: A Powerful Player, Not an Ally of the United States.
India is a significant global player in international relations, possessing considerable strategic and economic influence. However, its relationship with the United States has often been characterized by uncertainty and fluctuation. US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell recently emphasized that while India will never be an ally or partner of the United States, maintaining good relations with New Delhi is strategically important for Washington.
Campbell made these remarks during a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, where he acknowledged the importance of nurturing the Indian diaspora in the United States as a powerful connection between the two nations. Despite India’s desire to remain independent and assert its own beliefs and interests on the global stage, Campbell maintained that there is potential for the strongest possible relationship between the two countries, even without a formal alliance.
One of the challenges faced by the United States in navigating its relationship with India is the latter’s increasing engagement with other major powers, such as Russia. In July 2021, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Russia for discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin on various issues, a move that sparked criticism from the West. The White House expressed frustration over the timing of the meeting, as it coincided with a NATO summit in Washington.
Despite Western pressure to distance itself from Moscow, India has continued to emphasize its strategic autonomy and maintain its relationship with Russia. Modi’s recent visit to Russia highlights this commitment, as well as his willingness to openly exchange opinions on the Ukraine crisis, dealing a blow to attempts by the West to portray Russia as a pariah over the conflict.
Looking forward, Campbell expects India to continue engaging more directly in global issues, such as the ongoing situation in Ukraine. Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar confirmed that there will be “more contact” between New Delhi and both Ukraine and Russia in the coming months.
