The Vanishing Label: Kamala Harris and the Mystery of GovTrack’s Lost List

In 2019, a ranking published by GovTrack placed Vice President Kamala Harris as the “most liberal senator” in the United States. The list ranked senators based on their voting records and policy positions. However, this information has now been deleted from the website, with users instead finding a “page not found” message when attempting to access the list.

GovTrack is an online platform that provides information about the status of federal legislation, as well as data on congressional representatives’ voting records and research on legislation. The site claims to be one of the oldest government transparency websites worldwide.

During a 2020 interview with CBS News, then-Senator Kamala Harris was questioned about being considered the most liberal United States senator. When asked if she identified with that label, Harris initially referred to comments made by former Vice President Mike Pence during a debate. However, CBS News’ Norah O’Donnell clarified that nonpartisan GovTrack had rated her as the most liberal senator. In response, Harris appeared somewhat taken aback and did not immediately offer a clear answer.

More recently, there have been allegations of “cover-ups” regarding Vice President Kamala Harris. For example, Axios published an article claiming that Harris never held the title “border czar,” despite it being referenced by various lawmakers and media outlets. The outlet later updated its article to include a note admitting that they had “incorrectly labeled Harris a ‘border czar’ in 2021.

These incidents come after President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the presidential race in 2024, endorsing Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee. Harris has received endorsements from numerous high-profile Democrats, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and former Presidents Bill and Hillary Clinton.
