Security Shakeup: Campaigns Reevaluate Outdoor Events After Trump’s Assassination Attempt

The Secret Service has advised the Trump campaign to halt outdoor events and rallies in light of an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, according to sources who spoke to the Washington Post on condition of anonymity. The incident occurred at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, when 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire from the roof of a nearby building, hitting Trump with a bullet that pierced his right ear.

The Trump campaign is now considering indoor venues for events, such as basketball arenas and other large spaces capable of accommodating thousands of attendees. Holding events indoors offers greater control over who enters the venue, but comes with capacity limits and higher costs compared to outdoor rallies.

Since the assassination attempt, the U.S. Secret Service has faced increased scrutiny for security failings at Trump’s rally. Former Director Kimberly Cheatle appeared before the House Oversight and Accountability Committee for a hearing on Monday, where lawmakers from both parties questioned her about the incident. Cheatle resigned from her position as director of the agency on Tuesday.
