Pelosi Backs Harris: A New Dawn for Democratic Leadership

On Monday afternoon, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) publicly endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president, approximately 24 hours after President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the race and endorsed Harris. Pelosi’s announcement effectively ended the speculation surrounding her intentions but was not wholly unexpected as Democratic lawmakers and party elites have coalesced around Harris.

Today, it is with immense pride and limitless optimism for our country’s future that I endorse Vice President Kamala Harris for President of the United States,” Pelosi stated in a press release. She added, “My enthusiastic support for Kamala Harris is official, personal, and political.

Pelosi’s influence played a significant role in Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race. The former Speaker reportedly used polling data and stern conversations to convince Biden that he had no viable path to victory. Previously, Biden had pledged to remain in the race until receiving a direct message from “the Lord almighty.

The precise mechanism for selecting Harris as the Democratic nominee remains unclear, as no other candidate has announced their candidacy yet. However, as time passes, it becomes increasingly likely that a challenge to Harris’s ascendancy will be unlikely, with her gaining more support from donors and party elites.
