Former President Survives Assassination Attempt; Democrats Propose Removing Secret Service Protection

Former President Donald Trump recently survived an assassination attempt during a rally in Pennsylvania, further highlighting the importance of his Secret Service protection. This incident occurred just months after House Democrats proposed legislation that would remove Trump’s Secret Service protection.\r\n\r\nDemocrat Bennie Thompson introduced the Denying Infinite Security and Government Resources Allocated toward Convicted and Extremely Dishonorable (DISGRACED) Former Protectees Act (HR 8081) on April 19. The bill was co-sponsored by fellow Democrat Reps. Yvette D. Clarke, Troy A. Carter Sr., Frederica Wilson, Bonnie Watson Coleman, Jasmine Crockett, Joyce Beatty, Barbara Lee, and Steve Cohen.\r\n\r\nThompson’s fact sheet for the DISGRACED Act explained that Trump’s 91 felony charges in Federal and State courts across the country created a new exigency that Congress needed to address. The act would terminate Secret Service protection for individuals who qualify for it upon sentencing following conviction for a Federal or State felony.\r\n\r\nFollowing Saturday’s assassination attempt, Thompson tweeted that he was “glad the former President is safe” and thanked law enforcement for their rapid response. The U.S. Secret Service immediately rushed Trump off of the stage after shooting and killing the alleged shooter.\r\n\r\nThe bill has been referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary and awaits further action. Trump received 34 felony convictions following a lawfare trial in May, with sentencing scheduled for September 18. The sentence could include prison time.\r\n\nA source familiar with Trump’s security detail told The Federalist that the former President’s Secret Service protection had been requesting additional resources and protection, but these requests were denied repeatedly by the Department of Homeland Security under the current administration.
