From Nicaragua to Nevada: A Legal Immigrant’s Journey & Why She’s Changed Her Vote for 2022

A legal immigrant from Nicaragua took the stage at the Republican National Convention (RNC) on Monday, telling attendees that she regretted voting for President Joe Biden in 2020 but would not make the same mistake in November. Linda Fonos, who left Nicaragua 60 years ago and now resides in Las Vegas, Nevada, recounted her journey to America and her commitment to its values of hard work, learning the language, and respecting the laws.

However, she and her three sons lost everything when their home caught fire in 2022, forcing them to start over again as people across the nation struggled in Biden’s economy. As a life insurance worker, Fonos sees firsthand the struggle of Americans trying to save for the future while barely managing their basic needs. She expressed frustration with open borders, noting that “millions of dollars are being sent to help immigrants who came here illegally while hard-working families who did it the right way are left struggling.

Fonos admitted her mistake in voting for Joe Biden in 2020, eliciting laughter from the audience. She went on to say that she would not let her vote be taken for granted this November and urged others to join her in voting for Donald J. Trump. The convention’s first day focused on inflation as a key weakness for President Joe Biden, with Breitbart News reporting that Americans are deeply dissatisfied with his economic leadership and do not trust his economic agenda to improve their financial situation or the country’s.
