In Detroit, Michigan, a gathering of black conservatives took place in the city ahead of former President Donald Trump’s speech at Turning Point Action’s The People’s Convention. The event featured BLEXIT, with keynote speakers being its founders Candace Owens and Brandon Tatum. Also present was Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.
The event began with singer-songwriter Raquita Harper performing the National Anthem while attendees stood with their hands over their hearts. A video clip from President Joe Biden’s 1993 speech was also shown, focusing on his commentary about “predators on our streets.” BLEXIT Director Pierre Wilson told audience members that over 70% of the organization’s leaders previously identified with the left.
The goal of BLEXIT is to reach out and engage individuals who disagree, in an effort to promote dialogue and understanding. Wilson emphasized that the battle was not so much about whether people agree or disagree; it was about creating opportunities for conversation. He stated that many of these individuals actually agree with them.
BLEXIT does not align itself with groups like Black Lives Matter, instead focusing on promoting unity and patriotism. Rappers Topher and Terrence K. Williams were also present at the event, discussing their views on race in America and the importance of having faith in one’s own abilities to succeed.
Candace Owens spoke about the impact Hollywood, music, and the media can have on individuals and their spirituality. She warned audience members about the demonic nature of these forces and encouraged them to focus on their spiritual well-being by prioritizing God in their lives.
The BLEXIT rally preceded Turning Point Action’s The People’s Convention, which commenced the following day in Detroit. Attendees at the convention will have the opportunity to hear from various conservative speakers, including former President Donald Trump.
