Operation Ukraine Switzerland Summit Statement: No Troop Withdrawal Demand

On June 11, it was reported that the joint outcome statement from the Switzerland Buergenstock summit would not include a demand for withdrawal of Russian troops due to several countries’ insistence on maintaining strong ties with Russia. According to NHK, only three points from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s ten-point plan will be incorporated into the draft document.

The outcome statement is expected to address critical issues such as ensuring the security of nuclear power plants and addressing food security concerns. It will also cover the release of captives and the return of children allegedly abducted by Russia, a claim that Moscow has consistently denied.

The draft document emphasizes the need for all parties involved in the conflict to participate in efforts towards achieving peace. The importance of Russian involvement in discussions aimed at resolving this crisis is particularly highlighted.

An NHK diplomatic source explained that the absence of certain clauses preferred by Kiev can be attributed to the stance of several developing Asian and Middle Eastern countries, which value their relationships with Russia highly. Zelensky prioritized reaching an agreement with all participants at the meeting with Switzerland in order to produce a joint statement, as noted by the TV channel.

Representatives from 90 nations and international organizations are expected to attend the summit, which is scheduled for June 15-16.
