President’s daily calls to Hunter Biden in gun trial spark controversy

President Joe Biden plans to have a daily phone conversation with his son, Hunter Biden, during the ongoing gun trial in Delaware. The news comes as Jill Biden and Hunter’s wife were seen attending the courthouse proceedings for the second consecutive day. Both Joe and Jill Biden took detailed notes during the jury selection on Monday, according to court reporters.

The charges against Hunter Biden are being pursued by the Department of Justice, which is prosecuting him for making a false statement about the purchase of a firearm, possession of a firearm by an unlawful user or someone addicted to a controlled substance, and providing a false statement to a licensed federal firearms dealer.

White House advisers have stated that President Biden will be in contact with his son every day during the trial proceedings, as reported by Politico. It is unclear if Jill Biden will attend court each day of the trial. The White House has emphasized that the trial will not interfere with Joe Biden’s ability to perform his duties as president.

In a statement, President Biden expressed his love and pride for his son: “I am the President, but I am also a Dad. Jill and I love our son, and we are so proud of the man he is today.” The jury selection process concluded on Monday afternoon with 12 jurists chosen, one of whom had previously worked for the Secret Service. There are an equal number of men and women in the jury pool. All four alternates are women.

Opening statements were expected to begin on Tuesday at 9 AM by special counsel David Weiss’ office; however, a few jurors were late, according to NBC News. Prosecutors have stated that their first witness will be FBI Special Agent Erika Jensen. This witness is expected to introduce evidence of Hunter Biden’s text messages and related excerpts from his 2021 memoir, “Beautiful Things.
