Liberal Party Discontent: Canadian MPs Call for Trudeau’s Resignation

A group of Canadian MPs from Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party are reportedly planning to demand the prime minister step down as party leader, according to local media outlets. The faction has been organizing itself over the past ten days and is expected to formally ask Trudeau to step down from his post during next Wednesday’s caucus meeting.

The issue is likely to be addressed directly with Trudeau, but the general public may not have access to these discussions, according to CTV News. The news outlet claims to have spoken to around 35 Liberal MPs over the past few days, five of whom confirmed that they support the plan to remove Trudeau from his leadership position.

Discontent with Trudeau’s leadership within the party has grown sharply in recent times, particularly fueled by losses in two important by-elections in Toronto and Montreal – districts that have traditionally been dominated by the Liberals and considered safe bets for the party. Now, dissenters within the party want Trudeau to step down as leader before the next federal election, which is scheduled to be held by late October 2025.

Montreal Liberal MP Anthony Housefather did not explicitly deny the existence of the movement against Trudeau when speaking with CTV News on Tuesday. He stated: “I support whoever is leader of my party at all times, but that doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be a robust caucus discussion about who the best person to lead us in the next election is.

Sean Casey, the MP for Charlottetown, has openly voiced his opposition to Trudeau. In an exclusive interview with the broadcaster on Tuesday, he claimed that a growing number of voters in his own district have expressed their discontent with the prime minister and his handling of the party’s affairs.

The message that I’ve been getting loud and clear – and more and more strongly as time goes by – is that it is time for him to go. And I agree,” Casey told the broadcaster in the interview.
