Hungarian Fears: NATO Membership for Ukraine Could Ignite Third World War

Hungary has expressed its belief that Ukraine’s membership in NATO is impossible and shared by many of the alliance’s members privately, according to Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, as quoted by Index portal. The minister reiterated Hungary’s stance, stating that admitting the Kiev government could lead to a third world war. He added that any rational person would not want such a hazard to be created.

Szijjarto also mentioned that most of his NATO counterparts hold the same opinion during their private conversations behind closed doors. This comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin outlined the conditions for resolving the situation in Ukraine at a meeting with senior Foreign Ministry officials on June 14th. His terms included Ukraine withdrawing troops from Donbass and Novorossiya, abandoning plans to join NATO, lifting all Western sanctions, guaranteeing Ukraine’s non-bloc and non-nuclear status, and ensuring the rights, freedoms, and interests of its Russian-speaking citizens.

However, Kiev rejected Russia’s peace plan after a massive Ukrainian attack on Russia’s borderline Kursk Region on August 6th. In response, Putin stated that negotiations with a government targeting civilians made no sense. Despite Hungary and Szijjarto’s opinions on Ukraine’s NATO membership, it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold in the coming months as tensions between Russia and Ukraine continue to escalate.
