Shifting Tides: Korean Americans Turn Away from Democrats Over Inflation and Economic Concerns

Korean Americans are increasingly shifting their support away from Vice President Kamala Harris and the Democratic Party due to concerns over inflation and the economy, according to multiple reports. A recent survey revealed that only 38% of Korean Americans identified as Democrats in July, a significant decrease from the 51% who supported the party in 2020.

The same survey found that among Korean Americans, job security, the economy, and housing costs are considered extremely important issues when deciding how to vote. Inflation is also viewed as an important factor by 58% of Korean Americans, with 32% describing it as a very important issue. The cost of housing is another significant concern for this community, with 51% labeling it as extremely important, while 35% see it as very important.

Another poll conducted between September 3-9 found that support for former President Trump increased from 27% in April/May to 35% in September among Korean Americans. Meanwhile, support for President Joe Biden dropped from 49% to 62% during the same period. The decline in support for Democrats could impact election outcomes in states with significant Korean American populations, such as Georgia.

Many Korean Americans in Georgia have not yet established strong party loyalties, making their vote more susceptible to changes influenced by economic factors and concerns over price increases and decreased sales. However, some members of the community continue to express concerns about President Trump’s past rhetoric against immigrants, which may influence their voting decisions in future elections.
