Senate Democrats Eye Filibuster’s End for Federalized Abortion Rights

Several Senate Democrats are pushing to end the filibuster in order to pass legislation that would federalize abortion and eliminate pro-life state laws. This move would reduce the number of votes needed to pass legislation in the U.S. Senate from 60 to just 51, which some Democrats have stated may be “worth the risk” if they were able to maintain control of the Senate and gain control of the House and presidency in the coming years. While some Senate Democrats are hesitant about what Republicans could achieve without the filibuster should they eventually regain control, others argue that reducing the threshold would enable the codification of “abortion rights” and other key legislative priorities. Vice President Kamala Harris has called for the end of the filibuster in order to restore Roe v. Wade, while Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Steve Daines warns that such a move could allow Democrats to pack the Supreme Court with more justices, make Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico states, and conduct a federal takeover of election operations across the country.
