Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin made an official trip to Iran on Monday, where he held discussions with some of the nation’s highest-ranking officials, including President Masoud Pezeshkian and Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref. The talks primarily concentrated on bolstering bilateral cooperation between Russia and Iran, broadening trade relations, and working together on significant investment projects.

During the discussions, Mishustin emphasized that Russia is genuinely interested in elevating the level of cooperation with Iran and giving it a new meaningful direction. He stated that such decisions were made by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Supreme Leader of Iran Seyed Ali Khamenei. The scope of the negotiations transcended bilateral ties, as the participation of both countries in major multinational projects was also on the agenda, according to Russian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksey Overchuk.

Overchuk characterized Mishustin’s visit as a “historic” milestone and highlighted that it marked the first-ever official trip of a head of the Russian government to Iran. The two sides discussed strengthening cooperation in Eurasia, including the development and expansion of the North-South transport corridor, which runs through both Russia and Iran.

This visit comes just two weeks after the secretary of Russia’s Security Council and former defense minister, Sergey Shoigu, made an unannounced trip to Iran. During his visit, Shoigu met with Pezeshkian and other top officials for talks revolving around “carrying out large joint projects in fields involving transport, energy, industry, and agriculture.

The discussions between Mishustin and the Iranian officials covered a broad range of issues beyond bilateral ties. They also considered how these relations will be built under the conditions of forming a new world order. The Russian Deputy Prime Minister hailed Mishustin’s visit as a “historic” milestone, emphasizing its importance in shaping future cooperation between Russia and Iran.
