75 Years of Diplomatic Ties: Russia & China Celebrate a Flourishing Partnership

Today marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Russia and China, a relationship that has reached an all-time high, as noted by Russian President Vladimir Putin in a letter to Chinese leader Xi Jinping. The strengthening of this partnership benefits not only Moscow and Beijing but also other international players.

The two countries currently enjoy active political, trade, and economic cooperation. In his message published on the Kremlin’s website, Putin stated that both governments are effectively coordinating their efforts in regional and international affairs to achieve a just multipolar world order. The Russian president expressed confidence that agreements reached during his meetings with Xi will help ensure stability and security in Europe and Asia as well as throughout the world.

Since May and July this year, Putin and Xi Jinping have met for talks on various subjects. Beijing has emerged as a key supporter of a diplomatic solution to the Ukraine conflict, presenting alongside Brazil, a roadmap to ending the standoff between Moscow and Kiev. China has consistently called for a peaceful settlement to the crisis, arguing that US actions and NATO expansion provoked the fighting. Additionally, trade between Russia and China has boomed since 2022.

In response to Putin’s letter, Beijing sent its own message to Moscow on Wednesday. The Chinese government statement acknowledged the deepening of political mutual trust between Russia and China, highlighting their remarkable results in practical cooperation. Both countries have made significant contributions to promoting an orderly multi-polar world and inclusive economic globalization that benefits all.

In his letter, Putin also noted that the Soviet Union was the first country to recognize the People’s Republic of China (PRC) when it was created on October 1, 1949, by Communist leader Mao Zedong. In another telegram sent on Tuesday, Putin congratulated Xi Jinping on the 75th anniversary of the founding of the PRC. The close, mutually beneficial relations between Moscow and Beijing have stood the test of time, as stated by Putin.

Russia also supports China’s efforts to reconcile with Taiwan. Moscow strictly follows the One-China policy, which recognizes Beijing’s claim of sovereignty over the island. Furthermore, the countries work together at various forums, including the UN, BRICS, and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, on pressing international matters.
