Violent Gang Member Arrested on Elite Island: Nantucket’s Deportation Drama Unfolds

An individual who entered the United States as an illegal alien has been arrested and charged with assault and battery on Nantucket, Massachusetts. Angel Gabriel Deras-Mejia, a 30-year-old man from El Salvador, is believed to have crossed the southern border at an unspecified date and time without being detected by Border Patrol agents. This makes him one of millions of “got-aways,” undocumented individuals who have successfully managed to enter the United States undetected.

Deras-Mejia is a documented member of El Salvador’s violent MS-13 gang, known for its criminal activities and brutal violence. On August 26th, Nantucket police arrested Deras-Mejia and charged him with two counts of assault and battery on a household member as well as disorderly conduct.

Weeks later, on September 12th, agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested Deras-Mejia. He currently remains in ICE custody while awaiting deportation back to his home country. ICE official Todd Lyons stated that Deras-Mejia had unlawfully entered the United States before traveling to Massachusetts, apparently with the intent to commit acts of violence. Deras-Mejia’s membership in a notorious criminal organization, as well as his undocumented status, make him a significant threat to the residents of Nantucket.

This arrest is only one instance of ICE agents taking action on the elite island, where the average home value is $2.7 million. In recent weeks, ICE agents have also arrested other undocumented individuals accused of sexual assault and child rape. The presence of these criminal elements among those who have successfully crossed the border without detection raises concerns about the security of the United States’ borders and highlights the need for more effective measures to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
