Trump Gains Momentum Among Independent Voters, Leads Over Kamala Harris

Former President Donald Trump is currently leading Vice President Kamala Harris among independent voters in recent polls from the Economist/YouGov. The survey asked registered voters who they plan to vote for in the November 2024 presidential election, and found that Harris has a three-point advantage over Trump nationally, with 47 percent of respondents favoring her compared to Trump’s 44 percent. Another one percent said Green Party candidate Jill Stein, while one percent said “other.” Five percent were unsure, and two percent stated they would not vote.

However, among independent voters specifically, Trump has taken the lead from Harris, with 42 percent saying they plan to vote for him compared to 40 percent who said they would vote for Harris. Eleven percent remain unsure about their choice. When asked who they prefer between the two candidates, independents are split, with 42 percent favoring Trump and the same percentage favoring Harris.

It should be noted that 13 percent of independents supporting Harris said they could change their mind before the election, while only five percent of those supporting Trump said they might change their minds. Ninety-five percent of Trump supporters stated they are “definitely” voting for him in the survey conducted from September 21-27 among 1,622 U.S. adult citizens.

In addition to edging out Harris among independents, Trump made headlines this week for either tying or besting her in a series of swing state polls and taking a one-point lead over Harris in the left-leaning Quinnipiac Poll at the national level, garnering 48 percent to Harris’s 47 percent. This suggests that Trump may be gaining momentum as the race approaches.
