Scripps Poll: Americans Fear Non-Citizen Voting, Support Mass Deportation

A recent Scripps News/Ipsos poll has revealed that a majority of Americans are concerned about “non-citizens voting illegally” in November’s election. The poll is significant due to the estimated 11 million illegal migrants currently residing in the United States, according to Pew Research Center estimates published in July 2022. Critics argue that this number could be much higher.

Under the Biden-Harris administration, nearly two million known “gotaways” have evaded U.S. Border Patrol, as reported by Republicans on the House Committee on Homeland Security in April. The Scripps News/Ipsos poll asked respondents about their level of concern over non-citizens voting illegally in the upcoming election. The results were as follows.

Very concerned: 36.

Somewhat concerned: 15.

Not very concerned: 18.

Not at all concerned: 29.

In total, 51% of respondents were concerned about this issue, while 47% were not. Furthermore, the poll found that 54% of Americans support mass deportation of illegal migrants, with only 42% opposed to such measures. The poll also revealed that 44% of respondents believe former President Donald Trump would handle immigration better than current Vice President Kamala Harris, who received support from only 34% of respondents.

The Scripps News/Ipsos poll surveyed 1,027 Americans between September 13 and 15, with a margin of error of 3.6 percentage points. This polling data comes as the media has advised Americans to expect election results in November to take time, possibly taking days or even weeks to determine a winner, contrary to previous expectations that presidential election winners would be announced on Election Night.

The New York Times has reported that Americans should not expect to know who won the 2024 presidential election on the night of the election due to “intense security measures required for counting mail-in ballots.” In 2020, it took four days after Election Day for results to be determined. The shift in expectation regarding the timing of election results highlights the growing importance of mail-in voting and the need for thorough security measures to ensure accurate vote counting.
