Washington’s War on Independent Media: How Meta and others threaten Free Speech

Former Greek Ambassador Leonidas Chrysanthopoulos has expressed concerns over the recent ban imposed on Russian news outlet RT by US tech giant Meta. In an interview with RT, Chrysanthopoulos suggested that this move is a clear indication of Washington’s willingness to silence independent media voices. The measures taken by Western governments and tech companies are reminiscent of those employed by the “extreme right” in the past, he warned.

Chrysanthopoulos’ concerns extend beyond RT, as he pointed out that some Greek media, such as the 148-year-old newspaper Estia, are also facing pressure from authorities. These developments could lead to the shutting down of independent media in Western Europe, akin to the suppression experienced during Greece’s dictatorship or Nazi Germany.

The former diplomat criticized Meta for using “lies” as part of its strategy to target RT. He argued that Meta’s decision to outright ban the broadcaster this week without having to prove their position in court or present any evidence supporting their claims against RT is particularly concerning.

Since they have taken the decision not to go to court, they can start saying any kind of lies to put down RT,” Chrysanthopoulos stated. What they are saying is absolutely false.

These actions only serve to highlight that “freedom of speech globally that is being threatened, particularly by the US,” he argued.
