France Fears World War III: Ukraine Conflict Raises Alarms for Moscow-NATO Clash

The French government is expressing concern about the escalating Ukraine conflict that could spiral out of control, according to Le Monde on Saturday, citing diplomatic sources. The paper reported that fears are rising over a possible direct collision between Moscow and the NATO bloc due to discussions regarding authorizing Kiev to conduct strikes deep in Russian territory using Western weapons.

Despite no official statement from France on this matter, unnamed diplomats have admitted privately to concerns about potential escalation and attempts to avoid it. One French official told Le Monde that “We must do everything possible to avoid World War III.” The official also acknowledged the possibility of Russia expanding its military operations due to warnings issued by top Russian officials like President Vladimir Putin.

On Thursday, Putin warned that removing restrictions on Ukraine’s use of Western weapons would directly involve the US and its allies in the conflict, which would be met with an appropriate response from Moscow. Explaining his stance, Putin stated that such weaponry relies solely on Western intelligence and targeting solutions, making it impossible for Kiev to use it independently.

This position was echoed by Russia’s envoy to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, who warned that allowing Kiev to conduct strikes deep in Russian territory using Western weapons would constitute an “open war” between NATO and Russia. Nebenzia added that the West cannot dodge responsibility and blame Kiev for everything if this move takes place.
