Trump Surpasses Harris Among Independents: The DNC Impact

Former President Donald Trump Has Gained Ground Over Kamala Harris Among Independents in Recent Polls.

A recent weekly survey from The Economist/YouGov revealed that former President Donald Trump has surpassed Vice President Kamala Harris among independent voters following the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago, Illinois. The survey posed the question: “In November 2024, who do you plan to vote for in the presidential election?” and provided respondents with four options: Trump, Harris, independent candidate Cornel West, and Green Party candidate Jill Stein.

Notably, this poll was conducted after independent Robert F. Kennedy Jr. dropped out of the race and endorsed Trump. The survey revealed that while Harris led Trump by three percentage points (47% to 45%) a week prior, she now leads him by just two points (47% to 45. One percent of respondents chose Stein, and West received zero percent support, with five percent remaining undecided.

While Trump predictably led among Republicans and Harris led among Democrats, the former president has solidified his lead among independents, garnering 42 percent compared to Harris’s 37 percent—a five-point gap. This represents a gradual shift in favor of Trump over the past few weeks, as initially, Harris had taken the lead among independents before their support diminished, resulting in a tie three weeks ago (36% each) and a one-point advantage for Trump the following week. Last week, both candidates were tied with 38 percent support from this demographic. In other words, Trump’s support among independents has increased by four percentage points in the last week alone since the DNC and RFK Jr.’s withdrawal from the race.

Another two percent of respondents who identified as independent chose Stein, while one percent chose West. Notably, two percent indicated they “would not vote” if these were the available options—a decrease from the six percent who stated the same last week. It is worth mentioning that this survey was conducted while both West and Stein encouraged Democrats to “abandon Harris” during the DNC.

West told Breitbart News, “We are calling for more than that.” Another 13 percent of independent respondents were unsure whom they would support, up from the nine percent who said the same last week. The survey was conducted between August 25th and 27th, 2024, among 1,555 U.S. adult citizens.

The DNC clearly failed to generate enthusiasm and support for Harris during the convention. Stein remarked: “Do not think for a moment that the Democratic Party is the answer to fascism. It would be more accurate to say it is the cause of fascism.” She further explained that the Democrats have promoted policies such as privatization, austerity, tax giveaways for the super-wealthy, and endless war.
