Harris and Walz: The Most Pro-Abortion Democratic Ticket Yet

Reports suggest that Kamala Harris has selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate for the Democratic presidential nomination. This decision has been criticized by one of America’s leading pro-life organizations, who claim that this ticket represents the “most pro-abortion Democratic ticket yet.

SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser stated that both Harris and Walz are firmly in favor of abortion without any limitations. She pointed to legislation signed by Walz in January 2023, which was considered the most extreme law at the time, allowing for unlimited access to abortions throughout pregnancy as a “fundamental right.

Walz made Minnesota the first state in the nation to legislate abortion after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and returned the issue of abortion to individual states and their elected representatives. The bill, known as H.F. 1 or the Protect Reproductive Options (PRO) Act, aimed to ensure that residents of Minnesota had access to various reproductive health care options, including abortion, birth control, family planning assistance, and sterilization.

Abortion was already legal in Minnesota up until the second trimester of pregnancy. The author of the bill, Sen. Jennifer McEwen (D), explained that it sought to enshrine abortion access, regardless of any future court decisions. Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson expressed concern about its passage at the time, calling it “the most extreme bill in the country regarding youth sterilization, late-term abortions, and new reproductive rights.

Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life (MCCL) criticized the legislation as allowing unlimited access to abortion without any restrictions. Dannenfelser also noted that Walz had signed additional laws further expanding taxpayer-funded abortions, removing informed consent protections, and significantly weakening protection for babies born alive.

In contrast to Republican proposals aimed at limiting the number of abortions allowed, Democrats have made it clear they want no limitations on abortion nationwide. With Kamala Harris’s announcement of Tim Walz as her running mate, pro-life organizations are voicing concerns about the potential implications for the protection of unborn children.
