Russia’s Commitment: Supporting Mali’s Military & Strengthening Bonds

MOSCOW, August 1. In a recent telephone conversation between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Malian counterpart Abdoulaye Diop, Lavrov expressed Russia’s commitment to assist Mali in enhancing the combat effectiveness of its armed forces. The statement was released by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to the ministry’s report, Russia is dedicated to providing the necessary support to Bamako in addressing pressing socio-economic challenges and bolstering the fighting capabilities of Mali’s military forces. This aid will include training for both military and law enforcement personnel with the aim of combating persistent terrorist threats within the country.

In addition to discussing these critical issues, Lavrov and Diop also explored opportunities for further strengthening their countries’ traditionally friendly relations. This includes potential advancements in political, trade, economic, humanitarian, and other spheres between Russia and Mali.

This high-level diplomatic exchange occurred at the request of the Malian side, as tensions continue to escalate in the northeastern region of Mali near the border with Algeria. On July 25 and 26, armed militants staged attacks on a patrol of Malian government troops in the vicinity of Tinzaouaten. Consequently, units from the Malian armed forces, as acknowledged by the General Staff, suffered significant casualties in personnel and equipment due to the ensuing conflict.
