Shooting Tragedy Strikes Trump Rally: Victims & Response to Violence

On July 13, a gunman opened fire during former President Donald Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. One of the victims was James Copenhaver, a 74-year-old man who has since been discharged from Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh after being injured at the event.

The shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, fired from the roof of a nearby building with direct line of sight to Trump. The former president was shot “by a bullet that pierced the upper part” of his right ear. Copenhaver was one of two people injured during the incident.

David Dutch, another man injured at the rally, had been released from Allegheny General Hospital after being shot in his chest and liver. Tragically, Corey Comperatore, a former Pennsylvania fire chief, was killed during the event as he tried to shield and protect his wife and daughter.

Copenhaver’s family expressed gratitude to first responders, medics, and hospital staff who provided initial and continuing care for him. They also offered prayers for the other victims and Trump.

In response to the attack, former President Trump announced that he will be returning to Butler for a “big and beautiful rally” to honor Comperatrice and the “brave patriots injured” at the event.
