Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his concerns over the growing tensions in the Middle East during a meeting with Syrian President Bashar Assad at the Kremlin on Wednesday. The Russian presidential press service reported that the visit from Assad could indicate Moscow’s willingness to mediate between Türkiye and Syria, as relations between Damascus and Ankara have been strained for nearly 12 years.
This was the first meeting between Putin and Assad since March last year. During their discussion, Putin expressed his concern over the Middle East’s “tendency towards escalation,” which directly affects Syria as well. He also mentioned that there are many issues to discuss regarding trade and economic cooperation between Russia and Syria.
Assad responded by acknowledging the challenges both countries have faced in recent decades but emphasized the strong level of trust maintained throughout their relationship. The Syrian president also highlighted the importance of the meeting, stating that it was crucial to discuss possible prospects for the development of events in the world and the Eurasian region.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov remarked earlier this week on reconciliation between Russia and Syria, emphasizing its significance for a political settlement of the Syrian conflict and stability throughout the Middle East. Peskov also acknowledged reports that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan might meet with Assad in Moscow next month, indicating that establishing contacts between Turkish and Syrian representatives at various levels is on Russia’s agenda.
Peskov emphasized the importance of both sides resuming dialogue, stating that it would be very important for the entire region. With many countries, including Russia, expressing interest in helping Turkey and Syria improve their relations, there seems to be potential for progress towards a more stable Middle East.
