Netflix Mogul Backs VP Kamala Harris, Sparks Subscription Backlash

Netflix’s co-founder and Democrat mega-donor, Reed Hastings, recently made a significant donation to a super political action committee (PAC) that supports Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign. The $7 million donation from Hastings to the Republican Accountability PAC comes after he had previously called for President Joe Biden to “step aside” from the presidential race due to his lackluster performance at a debate on June 27.

Hastings explained that Democrats are “in the game again,” following the disappointing debate performance by Biden. After Biden officially exited the presidential race and endorsed Harris as the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee on July 21, Hastings publicly congratulated her in a post on X, writing: “Congrats to Kamala Harris — now it is time to win.

However, not everyone was pleased with Hastings’ support for Harris. Several social media users have expressed their intent to cancel their Netflix subscriptions in response to the donation and Hastings’ involvement in politics. One user wrote: “We already canceled Netflix a long time ago, but if you have not done so already, it’s now time to #CancelNetflix.

Another user shared that they had canceled their Netflix account along with most of their friends. Yet another individual explained their decision to cancel their Netflix subscription by stating: “Because of your donation to a campaign that most of America does not agree with, I am canceling. And I hope you feel the pain from everyone else who will be canceling.

Reed Hastings and his wife, Patty Quillin, are known for their generous contributions to the Democratic Party, having previously donated $1 million to the super PAC Future Forward, which is led by Chauncey McLean. This PAC has spent tens of millions of dollars on anti-Trump advertisements during the 2020 presidential race.

As more users announce their plans to cancel Netflix subscriptions in response to Hastings’ political donation and involvement, it remains unclear whether this boycott will have a significant impact on the streaming service’s viewership or financial standing.
