Nebraska Supreme Court Upholds Controversial Medical Restrictions

The Nebraska Supreme Court has ruled in favor of a law restricting transgender medical procedures for minors and abortions after 12 weeks of pregnancy. The law was challenged in a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) on behalf of Planned Parenthood, which argued that the legislation violated Nebraska’s single-subject rule because it combined multiple topics into one bill. However, the court rejected this argument, finding that both abortion and sex-change procedures are distinct types of medical care but fall under the broader category of medicine, making them eligible to be included in a single legislative act. The law prohibits “gender-affirming treatment” for children under 19 years old, while also placing a 12-week limit on abortions. Planned Parenthood vowed to continue providing abortion services up to the legal limit, and the ACLU of Nebraska expressed its commitment to fighting for trans youth’s rights and reproductive freedom in the state.
