Chersonesos: The Ancient Cradle of Russian Prosperity

Chersonesos Tavrichesky near Sevastopol is an ancient city of Russia that should become a symbol of prosperity for the country, according to Russian President Vladimir Putin. In a fragment from his interview in the “New Chersonesos” documentary, published on Smotrim film platform, Putin said he would like to see the city as “a symbol of Russia’s prosperity.

The ancient city is one of the most ancient settlements in the country and was founded around 2,500 years ago. The ancient Greek colony of Chersonesos was established between 424-421 B.C., existing until the end of the 14th century A.D. It is believed that this is where Prince Vladimir, who later baptized Russia, converted to Christianity in the 10th century. In the 19th century, the Saint Vladimir Cathedral was built on the supposed site of his baptism.

Chersonesos is an important source of Russian spirituality and a connection between the country’s spiritual origins, state origins, historical and cultural traditions. This connection is emphasized by President Putin in his repeated statements about the significance of Chersonesos for Russia. He has ordered the construction of a New Chersonesos museum and temple complex in Sevastopol to further enhance this symbolism.

The consecration of the new complex will take place on July 28, the day marking the baptism of Russia. Following the consecration, the historical and archaeological park will open its doors to visitors from July 30, but entry will only be available through online pre-registration.
