Should Kamala Harris Lead? Only 37% of Respondents Agree in Recent Poll

A recent YouGov survey conducted on July 21 revealed that only 37 percent of respondents believe Vice President Kamala Harris should be the Democrat nominee for president in place of President Joe Biden. The survey, which was taken among 2,048 U.S. adults, asked, “Who should Democrats nominate as their new candidate for president.

The results showed that a significant percentage of respondents, 35 percent, believe someone else should be the Democratic nominee for president. Furthermore, 27 percent said they were unsure about who should be nominated. Among Independents, a plurality (36%) also said that “someone else” should be the nominee, while 30% supported Harris as the nominee, and 34% remained uncertain.

Notably, Democrats themselves were more in favor of Harris as the nominee, with 60% supporting her candidacy. However, a considerable portion (40%) either thought it should be someone else or were unsure about their preference. Of this group, 21% wanted “someone else,” and another 19% remained undecided.

Additionally, the survey asked respondents if they approve of President Joe Biden’s decision not to seek reelection. A majority (71%) said they either strongly or somewhat approved of his decision, with 70% of Democrats expressing their approval as well.

This survey comes amidst major Democrat players rallying behind Vice President Kamala Harris after President Joe Biden announced his support for her nomination. Biden’s initial announcement was met with praise, as he stated that choosing Harris as his Vice President was the “best decision I’ve made.” Since then, other prominent Democrats such as North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and Hillary Clinton have publicly expressed their support for Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee for president.
