Cox Changes Stance, Endorses Trump for Unity and Lowered Tensions

Utah Governor Spencer Cox (R) has endorsed former President Donald Trump, a change from his previous stance where he said he would endorse neither Trump nor Joe Biden. During a press conference on Friday morning, Cox stated that he would do everything in his power to help Trump win the election and unite the country.

Cox explained that his commitment to assisting Trump was based on his desire to lower tensions in the United States and expressed hope that Trump is genuinely committed to this cause as well. In a departure from last week’s statements, Cox had initially stated he would not vote for either presidential candidate during an appearance on CNN on July 10th. Instead, he planned to write in a candidate of his choice and clarified that he did not vote for Trump in the past two elections (2016 and 2020.

In February, Cox had gone as far as saying that it would be a “huge mistake” for Republicans to nominate Trump as their presidential candidate. Despite this, the Utah governor clarified that he is not anti-Trump but has some serious concerns about the former president’s actions, such as his alleged involvement in the January 6th protests. Cox had previously called on Trump to resign, believing it would be beneficial for the nation.

Cox stated that the assassination attempt on Trump changed his perspective. He revealed that he wrote a letter to Trump following the incident, quoting from it: “I believe in our better angels, Mr. President, and I believe you are capable of being that kind of leader for this troubled nation.” Cox continued by highlighting Trump’s bravery during the assassination attempt, describing him as “bloodied but not bowed” and showing “courage — literally — under fire.
