Trump Leads Biden in Latest National Poll, Shooting Incident Leaves Mark on Public Opinion

Former President Donald Trump is currently leading President Joe Biden in national polls according to a recent HarrisX/Forbes survey. The survey found that Trump had garnered 45% support, compared to Biden’s 42%, with an additional 13% of respondents remaining undecided.

When it comes to the crowded field of potential third-party candidates, Trump’s lead expands even further. He currently holds a four-point lead over Biden (43% support for Trump versus 39% for Biden. Independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. follows with 13% support, while Green Party candidate Jill Stein and independent candidate Cornel West each have two percent support.

This same survey also showed Trump with a ten-point advantage over independents, leading with 55% to Biden’s 45. This trend was consistent even when considering the impact of leaning voters in their analysis.

Notably, this particular survey was taken between July 13th and 15th, 2024 – just two days after a failed assassination attempt on Trump occurred on July 13th. The tragic event took the life of one attendee and injured two others outside of Trump’s appearance. The survey found that 94% of respondents had heard about the incident, with 77% deeming it an “assassination attempt” rather than an act of violence or terrorism.

Interestingly, over one-third of respondents said that coverage of Trump’s shooting in print papers was unfair and biased, while 23% and 20% felt the same way about online news portals and cable news, respectively. The survey, conducted among a sample size of 1,918 registered voters, has a +/- 2.2 percent margin of error.

Trump himself has attributed his survival to divine intervention, stating that “God alone” saved him from harm during the assassination attempt. As we approach the 2024 election cycle, it will be interesting to see how these dynamics continue to play out on the national stage and influence public opinion in the coming months.
