New Test for Restraint: Responding to the Trump Assassination Attempt

CBS News Chief Political Analyst and Senior National Correspondent John Dickerson discussed how the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump presents a new test for people to exercise restraint and grace in their responses and opinions. He noted that one American, Corey Comperatore, a former Pennsylvania fire chief, husband, and father, had been killed after a gunman opened fire and attempted to assassinate Trump, while two others were left critically injured. The former president was injured by a bullet that pierced the upper part of his right ear. Dickerson emphasized that one American died for supporting a political candidate and the life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness that are promised in campaigns have been stolen from them. He urged people to respond with restraint, grace, and the instinct to forego an advantage when something larger is at stake, rather than sorting this tragedy by partisan reflexive acrimony and fear. The call for restraint and grace comes after years of comparisons between Trump and voters who support him to being Hitler and Nazis. Despite these attempts to draw connections, Dickerson urges people to remember that this is a new moment and test, not to stop thinking or slow the vigorous fight of ideas, but rather to respond with restraint, grace, and the instinct to forego an advantage when something larger is at stake.
