In light of the unsuccessful assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump, who is set to become the GOP nominee for president again in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, many Democrats have expressed concerns about the need to improve political discourse and eliminate violence from public life. While their sentiments may be sincere, it remains uncertain if any concrete actions will be taken to address these issues.
Here are eight steps that could help reduce tensions and promote a more civil political environment.
1. Release all nonviolent January 6 prisoners with charges dropped as soon as possible. This would demonstrate good faith on the part of Democrats and provide closure for those affected by the events of January 6, 2021.
2. Withdraw Bennie Thompson’s legislation that would strip U.S. Secret Service protection from any protected individual convicted of a crime and sentenced to jail time. This was clearly aimed at targeting Trump, and its withdrawal would be a positive step towards de-escalating tensions.
3. Provide former President Donald Trump with the expanded U.S. Secret Service protection he requested, as well as RFK with Secret Service protection. Ensuring the safety of both individuals would demonstrate a commitment to protecting political figures from potential threats.
4. End the use of inflammatory rhetoric by Democrats and establishment media figures who describe Trump as a “threat to democracy,” an “authoritarian,” or a “dictator.” This kind of language only serves to further polarize the nation and is not conducive to constructive dialogue.
5. Allow Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has a long history of assassination attempts against his family members, to receive U.S. Secret Service protection. This would show that the government takes such threats seriously and is committed to protecting public figures.
