Orban Seeks Erdogan’s Support for Hungarian Peace Mission on Ukraine

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has sought Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s backing for his peace mission on Ukraine, according to a statement by PM’s Press Secretary Bertalan Hawashi. The two leaders held talks in Washington on Tuesday, discussing Hungary’s peacemaking efforts and the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war.

In the course of their discussions, Orban requested Erdogan’s support for the Hungarian peace mission, highlighting Turkey’s role as a successful mediator in this conflict so far. The prime minister emphasized that by uniting their efforts, they could take another step towards achieving peace in the region.

The Hungarian government has previously expressed its support for Turkey’s efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict, including efforts to restore the grain deal which aims to supply Ukrainian grain to world markets. Last week, Orban conducted several foreign visits aimed at finding ways to settle the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. On July 5, he visited Moscow and discussed possible avenues for resolving the conflict with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Before that, on July 2, Orban met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kiev, while on July 8, he held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping to exchange views on the prospects of resolving the Ukrainian crisis.
