Former NRA CFO Banned from Money Management: A Warning to Nonprofits on Financial Accountability

Former NRA CFO Wilson Phillips has been given a 10-year ban on managing money for a nonprofit in New York, according to The Associated Press. This comes after Phillips was found liable earlier this year for his role in financing the extravagant lifestyle of longtime NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre.

The 10-year ban on money management is a result of an agreement with the state and Phillips must also repay approximately $2 million to the NRA for his part in covering up and enabling LaPierre’s lavish spending. New York Attorney General Letitia James commented on Phillips’ punishment, stating that “today’s agreement should serve as an example that my office will hold anyone, and everyone, involved in abusing their power or misappropriating funds accountable.

Meanwhile, Wayne LaPierre is also required to pay back nearly $4.4 million to the NRA. This marks a significant punishment for those found guilty of financial misconduct within nonprofit organizations. The case serves as a reminder that nonprofits must remain vigilant in monitoring their finances and holding their officials accountable for any potential abuses of power or funds.
