In the letter, he stated that he is determined to beat former President Donald Trump and believes that he is the best candidate for the job. Despite concerns raised by nine Democrat lawmakers about the president’s health post-debate, Biden maintains that he would not be running again if he did not believe in his ability to defeat Trump in 2024.
In his letter, Biden emphasized the importance of respecting the decision made by Democratic voters. He stated that the press, pundits, big donors, and any selected group of individuals should not decide who becomes the nominee for the Democratic Party. Instead, he argued that it is crucial to uphold democracy within the party.
The opposition to Biden’s reelection campaign has gained momentum in recent weeks, with Reps. Jerry Nadler (D-NY), Mark Takano (D-CA), Don Beyer (D-VA), and Adam Smith (D-WA) being the latest Democrat lawmakers to call for him to quit the race. These members join five other lawmakers who have publicly called for Biden to withdraw from the presidential race.
However, support for Biden among the Democrat party’s leadership remains strong. House Speaker Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) continue to back the president in his bid for reelection.
Political experts suggest that there are several challenges facing the Democratic Party if they decide to replace Biden as their presidential candidate. These include the logistical difficulty of replacing him on 50 state ballots, moving money behind a new candidate, and finding an alternative candidate who would likely be viewed as a sacrificial lamb running in Biden’s place.
