Unlikely Ties: Trump & Domenici Almost Neck-and-Neck with Dem Opponents in NM

In a recent internal poll conducted by the Domenici campaign, former President Donald Trump and Republican Senate candidate Nella Domenici are almost tied with their Democrat opponents in New Mexico. The poll reveals that Trump and current President Joe Biden are neck and neck in a hypothetical head-to-head presidential race, with Trump earning 47% of the likely voters’ support to Biden’s 49. In a larger six-way race, Biden’s lead over Trump reduces to one percent.

Similarly, in the Senate race, Domenici holds 42.2% support while incumbent Senator Martin Heinrich (D-NM) has 45.5. Around 9.7% of respondents remain undecided, making Senator Heinrich’s lead fall within the poll’s margin of error. The commissioned survey was conducted by 1892 and sampled 600 likely voters between June 19-24.

The results were released before Joe Biden’s disastrous debate performance, which has sparked debates among Democrats about potentially replacing the 81-year-old president at the top of their ticket. The poll’s margin of error is four percentage points. Former advisor to first lady Jill Biden, Michael LaRosa, emphasized that a formal behind-the-scenes discussion with President Biden about potentially stepping aside would likely have to come from Democratic leadership in Congress.

Following the debate, Republican Senate candidates in competitive races across the country started highlighting ties between their opponents and President Joe Biden. Domenici’s campaign also joined this trend by criticizing the job done by Biden and Senator Martin Heinrich in recent years, focusing on issues like high cost of living, rampant crime, and open borders.

This apparent strength of Trump and Domenici in New Mexico comes as Trump is following through on his plan to expand the universe of battleground states to include traditionally Democrat states. In December, Trump shared his vision with Breitbart News editor-in-chief Alex Marlow and Washington bureau chief Matthew Boyle, mentioning heavy plays for New York, New Jersey, Virginia, New Mexico, and Minnesota.
