Morales vs Arce: Bolivian Political Tensions Rise as Coup Accusations Fly

Former Bolivian President Evo Morales has accused current President Luiz Arce of staging a coup attempt against him in recent times. This accusation has led to a tense back-and-forth between the two, with Arce urging Morales not to take the side of the “fascists.

Morales, who was one of the first to raise concerns about General Juan Jose Zuniga’s role in organizing a coup against him, has since apologized to the international community for his alarm. He expressed regret that such a sensitive issue as a coup d’etat is being exploited by Arce and others.

Arce responded to Morales’ accusations by asserting that the events of June 26 were indeed an attempted coup, and he urged Morales not to side with those who deny this fact. In making these statements, Arce compared Zuniga’s actions to the events in 2019 that forced Morales to resign from his position as Bolivia’s president.

Interestingly, Arce was once a close ally of Morales, even serving as a minister of economy under his administration during the latter part of Morales’ tenure. However, disagreements have arisen between the two in recent times, particularly regarding who should become the presidential candidate for their ruling Movement for Socialism party.

This exchange of words between Morales and Arce highlights the ongoing political tensions within Bolivia, as well as the challenges faced by former allies turned adversaries. As these events unfold, it remains to be seen how the situation will develop and what impact it may have on the future of the country’s political landscape.
