French Elections: Macron’s Coalition Loses Majority; Le Pen’s Rise Puts Hung Parliament in Play

The second round of the French parliamentary elections will take place on Sunday, after a first round of voting last week. President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist coalition, Ensemble, is projected to lose its majority in the National Assembly, while far-right leader Marine Le Pen’s Rassemblement National (RN) party has made significant gains and could become the second-largest party in the French parliament.

The potential for a hung parliament raises questions about how Macron’s government will function without a clear majority in the legislature, especially given his strained relationship with opposition leaders. It is likely that negotiations will be necessary to form a coalition or secure support on a case-by-case basis for proposed legislation.
