Fact Check: Groceries Didn’t Get Cheaper Under Biden, So Why Are People Saying They Did

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre made a misleading statement about grocery prices during her appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe on Tuesday. Jean-Pierre claimed that grocery prices have gone down under President Joe Biden’s leadership, which is false according to recent data.

According to TheStreet, food prices jumped 6.3% in 2021 and 10.4% in 2022. While the rate of increase slowed in 2023, with the index up by only 2.7%, grocery prices remain higher than they were before Biden took office. Yahoo News reported that a basket of groceries that cost $100 in November 2020 would now set you back $125.80.

In May, the Consumer Index Price Report showed an increase in grocery prices from the previous month, with prices rising by 1.1 percent compared to 2023. Despite the slowing rate of inflation, prices continue to rise. The high cost of food and other goods under Biden’s administration is likely to impact his chances for reelection.

A Monmouth University poll from June found that 87% of Americans believe Biden’s policies have either hurt or had no impact on inflation, the number one issue among respondents. The same poll revealed that about half of American families (46%) struggle to remain financially stable, a higher percentage than under former President Donald Trump.
